SFYCA: Audition Tips

Participation in the Stangeland Family Youth Choral Academy (SFYCA) is an amazing experience! When you audition for one of the 82 spots in the SFYCA, your key to success is preparation. Whether you audition in person or submit a recorded audition, it is essential that you present yourself in the best possible manner. An audition provides the basic information about your musicianship, your musical seriousness, your ability to prepare challenging material successfully, and your general motivation regarding participating in the SFYCA.

Here are some things to remember.

  • Solo: Prepare a song, preferably from the standard vocal repertoire, that best demonstrates your singing ability. Your solo should be memorized. Consult a teacher or voice coach if you can. Consider searching YouTube for ideas for your solo. You’ll be surprised what you can find.
  • Exercises: Practice the exercises provided with the audition material, so that you can move through them quickly and confidently.
  • Bach Excerpt: It is extremely important that you learn the Bach excerpt well! You may use sheet music during a live audition but remember that you are being judged on how well know the material. Be advised, however, that the actual audition material may differ from what you hear in the recording, so your careful attention to all musical details in the audition material is essential. For extra help with your B Minor Mass excerpt, try singing with these Bach learning examples.
  • Live auditions: Arrive at the audition site 10 minutes before your audition time. You will need the extra time to fill out an audition sheet, warm up your voice, and RELAX! Remember, you will want to make the best impression possible during your audition.

Good luck! We look forward to hearing your audition.
