Conducting Master Class explores B Minor Mass

December 4, 2009

Master teacher Helmuth Rilling guides conductors as they prepare Discovery Series concerts

For the first time in OBF history, Bach's monumental B Minor Mass will be the focus of the OBF conducting master class.

Conductors who have taken the class, and audiences who have watched those students step up to the podium in Discovery Series performances, know that the master class is the very heart of the festival, where music, meaning, teaching, and performance intersect, enlightening audiences and inspiring emerging conductors. In our 40th anniversary, conductors and audiences will explore Bach's crowning masterwork, guided by one of the world's great Bach teachers, Helmuth Rilling.

In addition to the B Minor Mass, conductors will also study Bach's Orchestral Suites from both modern instrument and period practice perspectives, under the direction of conductors Jeffrey Kahane and Monica Huggett.

Huggett's recent recording of the Suites with Ensemble Sonnerie has been nominated for a Grammy in the catoegory of Best Small Ensemble Performance/Classical.

The class has also added new attendance options for class auditors, offering a wider choice of experiences to fit into tighter schedules and budgets.
