Go to TicketMaster for B Minor Portland

May 8, 2008
George Evano

Helmuth Rilling conducts the B Minor Mass.

The first concert played in the 2008 Oregon Bach Festival will also be the first opening night in its 39-year history performed outside of Eugene - and tickets are now on sale.

The B Minor Mass of J.S. Bach, with soloists, the OBF Chorus and Orchestra, and Helmuth Rilling, takes place June 27 at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Tickets are now on sale at the box office of the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, TicketMaster online, all TicketMaster outlets (including Fred Meyer and Joe's), or charge by phone, (503) 224-4400 (service charges apply).

Tickets range from $29-$55. The Portland concert is sponsored by Wells Fargo The Private Bank, Lufthansa, and KBPS All Classical.

The June 27 concert is the OBF’s first in Portland since 1981. Since then, the OBF has become one of the world’s most noticed celebrations of Bach’s music and influence, with critical raves from the Los Angles Times, NPR, Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post, and a catalog of ten CDs on the Hänssler label, including the Grammy-winning Credo by Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki.

Near the end of his life, Bach refined and assembled 25 years of his most important musical ideas into the Mass, his final great statement. A summation of his mastery and a testament to his devout faith, the Mass has become a pillar of Western culture. With its brilliant orchestra writing and stirring choral passages, it has been a signature work of the OBF, with Rilling conducting fifteen performances over the course of his 38 seasons in Eugene.

Rilling and his forces return to Eugene the next night, June 28, for a reprise of the B Minor Mass to open the Festival's run in Eugene.
