Master Class in Conducting: Fees, Facts & Forms

FEES & FACTS

MASTER CLASS FEES
Master class fees include the three core seminars and tickets to five major Festival concerts.

  • Conductors: $1250 (fees subject to change)
  • Non-conducting participants: $900

Fees are not required at time of application. A deposit is required upon notification of acceptance.

GRADUATE CREDIT is available for $50 per credit/hour from the University of Oregon. Conducting participants may earn up to six hours, non-conducting participants four. Hours are on a quarter, not semester basis.

ROOM & BOARD
Room and board: $1178 double/$1425 single

Housing and meals at Barnhart Hall, University of Oregon.

The residence hall features a bright and spacious cafeteria with delicious meals catering to adult tastes.

Please note: room prices may vary slightly. Persons staying before session dates will be charged according to the length of their additional stay.

APPLICATION & FORMS

APPLICATION MATERIALS
Non-conducting participants need only send the application form. Conducting applicants are asked to submit the the following:

  • Application form. Call (800) 457-1486, e-mail, or download.
  • CD of music for chorus and/or orchestra conducted by the applicant.
  • Several programs that include repertoire for chorus and/or orchestra conducted by the applicant.
  • Names, phone numbers, and titles of two references who can comment on the applicant’s conducting ability and musicianship.
  • Self addressed, stamped envelope of sufficient size and postage for return of materials.
  • DVD (or VHS) showing the applicant in rehearsal with either chorus, orchestra, or combined ensembles (preferred). Contents and timings must be listed. Applications for conducting participants will not be reviewed until the video cassette has been received.

Some notes about the DVD. The video must demonstrate the applicant’s technique and musicianship as a rehearsal technician and conductor. Therefore, please include:

  • One or more excerpts of a working rehearsal demonstrating your ability to hear and address technical musical items that need ensemble attention, such as intonation, rhythmic accuracy and precision, balance, diction, etc.
  • One or more excerpts of a working rehearsal in which you are developing interpretive aspects, such as musical articulation, dynamics, phrasing, tone, etc.
  • One or more excerpts of a performance, or a rehearsal in which the ensemble is ready for performance, in which all of your communication with the ensemble is through your conducting.
  • In all excerpts the camera must be focused on the conductor rather than the ensemble.
  • A list of all contents and timings including the title/composer of each work, date recorded, and timing of each selection.
  • DVDs and videotapes MUST be in U.S. television standard (NTSC).
