Considered one of Beethoven's supreme achievements, the "Solemn Mass" follows a traditional format, yet it's highly personal and direct. When it premiered, audiences had never heard anything like it. Ultimately, the new musical language set the stage for an era of Romantic composers. Called "divine" by NPR's Weekend Edition and a "miracle" by the Los Angeles Times, the joyous mass was accounted by Beethoven as his greatest work.
