Robert Levin
Guest Artist
Robert Levin has been heard throughout the United States, Europe, Australia, and Asia in recital, as a soloist, and in chamber concerts. His solo engagements on the Steinway include appearances with the orchestras of Atlanta, Berlin, Birmingham, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Montreal, Utah, and Vienna. On period pianos he has appeared with the Academy of Ancient Music, English Baroque Soloists, Handel and Haydn Society, London Classical Players, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique. As a chamber musician he has a long association with violist Kim Kashkashian and appears frequently with his wife, Ya-Fei Chuang, in duo recitals and with orchestra. He performs at many leading festivals and was named artistic director of the Sarasota Music Festival in 2007. Levin is renowned for his restoration of the classical period practice of improvised embellishments and cadenzas. He is also a passionate advocate of new music and has commissioned and premièred a large number of works, including Yehudi Wyner's piano concerto Chiavi in Mano (Pulitzer Prize 2006), Bernard Rands's Preludes (2007), and Thomas Oboe Lee's Piano Concerto (2007). His many recordings include a Bach concerto cycle with Helmuth Rilling for Hänssler, a Mozart concerto cycle with Christopher Hogwood for Decca, a Beethoven concerto cycle with Sir John Eliot Gardiner for ArchivMusic, and the complete piano works of Dutilleux on ECM. President of the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition, Levin is the Dwight P. Robinson Jr. Professor of the Humanities at Harvard University.
