ANTON ARMSTRONG has served as the founding artistic director of the Stangeland Family Youth Choral Academy since 1998. He is the Harry R. and Thora H. Tosdal Professor of Music at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, and has been conductor of the St. Olaf Choir since 1990. Previously he served ten years on the faculty at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and conducted the Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus. He is a graduate of St. Olaf College and earned a master of music degree at the University of Illinois and a doctor of musical arts degree from Michigan State University. He is the editor of a choral series for Earthsongs Publications and coeditor of the revised St. Olaf Choral Series for Augsburg Fortress Publishers. Armstrong is widely recognized for his work in the area of youth and children's choral music. He has served on the summer faculty of the American Boychoir School, Princeton, New Jersey, and currently serves on the national boards of Chorus America and the Choristers Guild. He is an active guest conductor and lecturer in countries around the world and has conducted ensembles and appeared before regional, national and international gatherings of the American Choral Directors Association, Music Educators National Conference, Choristers Guild, American Guild of Organists, and the International Federation of Choral Music. In January 2006 Baylor University selected Armstrong from a field of 118 distinguished nominees to receive the Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching. He spent spring 2007 in residency at Baylor University as a visiting professor.
