Guest Artist

Bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff is recognized as one of the most remarkable singers performing today. Since making his United States debut at the Oregon Bach Festival in 1995, he has sung with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Pittsburgh Symphony. He has performed in recital at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center and in the major recital series around the country, as well as at such festivals as Ravinia, Tanglewood, and Mostly Mozart. In Europe he regularly appears with such leading orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra and frequently sings in the major recital halls of Berlin, Vienna, Salzburg, Paris, Amsterdam, and London. In April 2003 Quasthoff made his first staged opera appearance as Don Fernando in Fidelio with Sir Simon Rattle conducting the Berlin Philharmonic in Salzburg. Since then he has sung the role of Amfortas in a highly acclaimed production of Wagner's Parsifal at the Vienna State Opera. Quasthoff has amassed an impressive discography that includes recordings for the BMG, Hänssler, EMI-Electrola, Philips, and Bayer labels. He is an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon recording artist since 1999; three of his CDs have received Grammy Awards, and his Watch What Happens: The Jazz Album was awarded the German media's prestigious Echo prize. His most recent release is Haydn: Italian Arias. A dedicated teacher and advocate for young vocalists, Quasthoff has been a professor of music at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin since October 2004.
